American Library in Paris Visiting Fellowship
is open to writers worldwide. Fellows receive a stipend of US$5000 to assist with travel and housing costs. Founded in 1920, the American Library is Paris is a private, non-profit English-language library. Applications close on 15 February.
Vermont Studio Center
is the largest international artists’ and writers’ residency program in the United States. Each month the Center hosts over 50 writers and artists from across the country and around the world. There are three fellowship application deadlines in 2019; 15 February, 15 June and 1 October.
Krakow UNESCO City of Literature Residency Program
is dedicated to young and emerging writers from the Cities of Literature of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. It offers a two-month stay at Villa Decius, a historical complex and cultural centre in Krakow. Residents receive a stipend of 2500 PLN (US$650 plus travel costs. Applications close on 25 February.
Tartu City of Literature International Residency Program
is open to writers and translators wishing to spend time in Estonia’s second largest city. Recipients will receive a two-month stay at the house of the former Karl Ristikivi Museum, a scholarship of 600 euros per month and travel costs to and from Tartu up to 350 euros. Residencies will take place in April and May. The deadline for applications is 25 February.
Historic Joy Kogawa House
is located in British Columbia, Canada. This residency is available to Canadian writers who have published two books and have previous teaching and public speaking experience. Residencies typically run for two months, at a time convenient to the writer. Writers may apply for remuneration through the Canada Council or other arts council. Applications for residencies in 2020 close on 28 February.
At Sea
is a twice-yearly writers’ residency based in Kent, England, open to writers under the age of 30. Recipients will have use of a historic two-bedroom seafront flat in Margate, as well as a £250 bursary towards expenses and £50 towards train travel. The next At Sea residency will run from Saturday 13 April to Sunday 21 April 2019 and is open to playwrights. The following residency will be in November 2019 and will be for poets. Applications for the playwrights’ residency close on 1 March.
Jack Kerouac Writer in Residence Project
provides four residencies a year to writers living anywhere in the world. Each residency consists of approximately a three-month stay in Orlando, Florida, in the cottage where Jack Kerouac wrote his novel Dharma Bums. Utilities and a food stipend of US$1000 are included. Applications for the 2019-2020 residencies close on 10 March.
Norton Island Residency
is located in a remote, rustic wilderness in Maine, halfway between Mount Desert National Park and Campobello Island. A committee of independent jurors will select 16 writers (from fiction, poetry, drama and non-fiction) for inclusion in the program which runs from 7 to 17 July 2018. If accepted, a $125 residency fee is payable, though a small number of scholarships are available. Applications close on 15 March.
Ireland Funds Monaco Residential Bursaries
have been established to enable literary and academic writers born or living in Ireland to pursue a current project during a one-month residency at The Princess Grace Irish Library in Monaco. Recipients receive flights, accommodation, a weekly subsistence payment and a €1300 honorarium. Applications close on 30 March.
Ljubljana City of Literature Writer in the Park International Residency Program
is offering two one-month residencies for writers at the newly restored Švicarija/Swisshouse Creative Centre. The residency is aimed at foreign published writers with a “palpable, factual relation with any of the other UNESCO Cities of Literature that has to be apparent and described as part of the application.” Applicants must have published at least one book. Applications close on 31 March.
Hugo House
in Seattle aims to provide an inspiring and creative place where writers and readers of all levels share an appreciation for well-written words. Its writer-in-residence program offers private writing offices and a monthly stipend of $500 per month for a period of nine months. Applicants should have a specific artistic project they are working on during their residency (e.g., developing a manuscript for publication) and should have a special interest in helping writers become better writers and fostering an appreciation of the craft. Applications close on 31 March.
M Literary Residency
offers a two-month-long residency in Beijing to a poet, fiction writer, or creative non-fiction writer. Sponsored by the M Restaurant Group, this program offers transportation, housing, food, and a $1000 stipend, and is required to participate in one or two events in the community. Applications close on 31 March.
Villa Sarkia
is run by the Nuoren Voiman Liitto Culture Association in Sysmä, southern Finland. Its residency is primarily designed to give emerging writers and translators the chance to focus on their work in a private and inspiring setting (a history of publication is not essential). Residency periods in Villa Sarkia are between one to three months. Applications for Autumn 2019 residencies close on 29 April.
Gladstone’s Library Writers in Residence
program began in 2011. Built in 1902, Gladstone’s Library is the UK’s only residential library. Four residencies are offered each year with each writer staying at the Library for a month. The Writers in Residence are asked to keep a blog about their stay, as well as running a creative writing workshop. Residents receive full room and board, reimbursement for travel expenses and a small stipend of £100 per week. Applications close on 30 April.
Eliza So Finish-Your-Book Fellowship
aims to give a writer time and solitude to help finish a book that is already in progress. The fellowship includes accommodation in a private house on the Clark Fork river trail in Montana, along with a $500 food stipend and $400 toward airfare. In 2019 two fellowships will be offered – one for immigrant writers (documented or undocumented) and one for Native American writers. Applications close on 5 April.
Wales Writer in Residence
comes with a bursary of £12,000 and offers two placements over a year – at National Theatre Wales and BBC Cymru Wales – and a guaranteed broadcast credit on BBC Radio 4 or BBC Sounds. This opportunity is open to writers who can represent the culture of Wales with authenticity (for example they may be from, or have lived or worked in Wales). Applications close on 3 June.
Associates of the Boston Public Library’s Children’s Writer in Residence Fellowship
Boston Public Library was established in 1848 and is the oldest large municipal library in the United States. The Library’s Children’s Writer in Residence Program provides an emerging children’s writer with the financial support and space needed to complete one literary work for children or young adults. The writer in residence receives a $20,000 stipend and a private office in the Central Library. Applicants cannot have published more than three books to date. Applications close on 10 June.
Sangam House
is an international writers’ residency program located in Nrityagram, India. It aims to bring together writers from across the world to live and work among their peers in a safe, supportive and nurturing space. A number of fellowships are on offer including The Nevatia Fellowship which supports non-fiction writing in English, especially in the areas of social and cultural change, and The Dhvani Fellowship which supports the work of translators working in and out of Indian languages. Applications close on 30 June.
The Reader Berlin
is offering a one-month residency in a luxury apartment courtesy of Berlin’s Circus Hotel, plus a four-day guest pass to The British Council Germany’s 2020 Literary Seminar. To apply/enter, writers should submit up to 3000 words (fiction or non-fiction) on the theme The Circus. The deadline is 30 June.
Can Serrat Residency
near Barcelona is offering one writer a three-week residency in January 2020 including accommodation, workshop space, activities and food. A paid residency, is also available with grants of up to 70% are also available. Applications close on 4 July.
Writers Omi at Ledig House
has hosted hundreds of authors and translators, representing more than fifty countries, including Gary Shteyngart, Kiran Desai and Colum McCann. Ledig House located in Ghent, New York, two and a half hours from New York City and guests may select a residency of one week to two months. Application close on 15 July.
Hedgebrook Writers in Residence Program
is located on Whidbey Island, about thirty-five miles north-west of Seattle. The program is open to all women writers, whether their work has been published yet or not. Applications opened on 18 June and close on 25 July.
Varuna Writers House
awards residential fellowships, including specific Flagship Fellowships for short story writers, poets and political writers and more, to Australian writers each year. In 2019, 24 fellowships will be awarded. Fellowships offer a writer independent writing time, accommodation and full board at Varuna in the Blue Mountains near Sydney. Varuna Fellowships are open to writers of all genres of imaginative writing. Applications open on 6 June and close on 30 July.
The Moth Magazine
is inviting emerging artists and writers (working towards first solo show or book publication) from anywhere in the world to apply for a week-long residency at their retreat near the village of Milltown in Ireland. To apply writers should send two short stories, six poems or the first three chapters of a novel. Applications close on 31 July.
Scotland Writing Residency
is located in Brora, a coastal village in the east of Sutherland in the Highland area of Scotland. The writer resides, for one week during summer or fall, in a furnished and recently renovated, traditional croft cottage, containing three bedrooms. The residency does not come with a cash prize. The residency has a rolling deadline; the current cut-off date is 25 August.
Prague City of Literature
offers six residencies every year, each lasting two months. Residents receive accommodation, a 600 euro per month stipend and are reimbursed for travel costs. Applications opened on 19 June and will close on 31 August.
Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts
offers year-round residencies of between two and eight weeks in Nebraska City. Open to writers, visual artists, and music composers worldwide, each resident receives accommodation, studio space, and a $100 per week stipend. Approximately 60 residencies are awarded per year. There are two deadlines each year: 1 March for residencies taking place between July and December, and 1 September for residencies between January and June.
African Writers Residency
is accepting applications from writers from Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Rwanda, Congo DR and Nigeria. The fully-funded residency programme will take place in Nigeria in November 2019 and in Kenya in February 2020. To apply writers are asked to submit a nonfiction story of not more than 1500 words on the theme The African Identity. Applications close on 7 September.
Jan Michalski Foundation Treehouse Residencies
take place at the foot of Switzerland’s Jura Mountains. As well as receiving accommodation in their own treehouse, residents will be paid a monthly allowance of 1200 Swiss Francs (approximately US$1200). Applications close on 15 September.
MacDowell Colony Fellowships
support residences of up to eight weeks for writers & other artists. The colony is located in Peterborough, New Hampshire and has 32 unique individual artists studios. Applications are considered in two rounds per year; the next deadline is 15 September.
Heidelberg City of Literature Office
is accepting applications for its Writer in Residence Program, located at Dilsberg Fortress in Neckargemünd (approximately 14 kms from Heidelberg). The residency takes place between 1 February and 30 April 2020 and applications must be residents of a UNESCO City of Literature. Each resident receives a payment of € 3,750 for expenses. Applications close on 16 September.
Granada Writers in Residence Programme
accepts applications from emerging writers, residing in any country in whichever language they write. In 2019 two writers will be selected. This residency takes place between 1 November and 1 December. Applications close on 20 September.
Jentel Artist Residency Program
is located on a 1000 acre working cattle ranch 20 miles south-east of Sheridan, Wyoming. It offers individuals a supportive environment in which to further their creative development. Applications for Summer/Fall Residencies close in January and applications for Winter/Spring Residencies closes on 15 September.
New York Public Library’s Cullman Center Fellowships
is an international fellowship program open to people whose work will benefit from access to the New York Public Library’s collections housed at its main branch on Fifth Avenue. Novelists, playwrights and poets are invited to apply, along with academics and independent researchers. Fellows can be from anywhere in the world. A stipend of up to $70,000 is granted to each fellow, along with an office, a computer and full access to the Library’s physical and electronic resources. Applications for 2020/21 fellowships close on 27 September.
New Orleans Writers’ Residency
takes place in a restored 19th century shotgun double apartment in the heart of New Marigny, near the French Quarter of New Orleans. Six writers will each receive accommodation, airfare up to $350, and a stipend of $200 per week. Writers from all backgrounds, genres, and styles are encouraged to apply. Applications for the 2020 residency will close on 30 September.
The Writers’ Colony
is offering a fellowship to a writer working on a short or long work of non-fiction focusing on how they have managed, and continue to manage, their mental illness. This fellowship entitles the recipient to a two-week stay, with meals provided, at the Writer’s Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Applications close on 30 September.
Denali National Park Artist-in-Residence Program
is dedicated to exploring new ways for visitors to experience Alaska’s Denali National Park. From hundreds of competitive applications each year, approximately six accomplished writers, artists and composers are invited by the park superintendent to spend ten days in Denali at their own expense the following winter or summer. Visits include a permit for limited access along the Denali Park Road and time alone at a historic ranger patrol cabin. Applications open on 1 May and close on 30 September
Wallace Stegner House
is located in Eastend, Saskatchewan. The Wallace Stegner House residency program accepts writers for stays from one week to up to eleven months. A rental fee of $250 is payable and includes all utilities. Writers and other artists from around the world are invited to apply. Applications requesting a stay of three weeks or more which are received before 30 September will be given first consideration.
Don Bank Writer in Residence
program offers writers the opportunity to work for 9 months at historic Don Bank Museum, a heritage building in a garden setting located in North Sydney. The 2020 residency runs from March to December (an earlier start is negotiable) and offers a comfortable study, kitchen and bathroom. Applications close on 21 October.
Malba Writers Residence
is intended for foreign writers, offering them the opportunity to stay 5 weeks in Buenos Aires as part of their professional and artistic development. Each year one call will be made during to cover the residencies of the months of May-June and September-October. The next application window is expected to open on 1 November.
Writing Between the Vines
offers writers a space to work in multiple vineyards in North America. Funded through application fees and in partnership with wineries, the program provides writers the time to focus on works in progress or cultivate new ideas in residencies of up to one week in length at no charge. Applications are expected to open July and close in early November.
Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity Spring Writers Retreat
is a self-directed program that offers time and space for writers to retreat, reconnect, and re-energise their writing practice. The residency runs from 8 March to 22 March 2020 and writers in all creative genres are invited to apply. Applications close on 27 November.
Fine Arts Work Center
fellowship program is only open to emerging writers. It awards seven-month writing fellowships to five poets and five fiction writers each year from October 1 through April 30. Fellows are provided with a private, furnished apartment and a monthly stipend of $750. Applications are close on 2 December.
Cove Park Literature Residencies
is a Scottish artists’ retreat located on the Rosneath peninsula, an hour’s drive west of Glasgow. Literature residencies take place between March and September and last for between one and three months. Applications are invited from established writers of short and long fiction; poetry; creative non-fiction and memoir; work that crosses these genres and also writers who have made their reputation in one field and wish to develop in another. To be eligible for consideration, writers must have published at least one full-length book in their field. Applications for 2020 residencies are expected to close in December 2019.
Faber Residency
Faber, the Arts, Sciences and Humanities Residency of Catalonia in Olot, is a place for writers, translators, artists of diverse disciplines, scholars and scientists to stay together and to work on their personal projects. Accommodation, a workspace and some meals are provided but the residency does not cover travel costs.
Wellstone Center in the Redwoods
offers four writing fellowships per year, as well as week-long writing residencies and an emerging writers residencies. The Center is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California, four miles from the Pacific Ocean. Applications are considered year round.
Shakespeare and Company
is an English-language bookshop in the heart of Paris, on the banks of the Seine, opposite Notre-Dame. Since it was established in 1951, Shakespeare and Company has thrown open its doors to all sorts of writers, artists, and intellectuals who sought refuge. In exchange, Tumbleweeds (as guests came to be called) are asked only to “read a book a day,” help out in the shop for a couple of hours, and write a single-page autobiography for its archives. The bookshop has housed an estimated 30,000 Tumbleweeds.
Fish Factory Creative Centre
is located in Stöðvarfjörður, a remote village in the East fjords of Iceland. It offers residencies of up to six months to writers as well as other artists. Fees apply which cover studio space, accommodation, access to facilities and workshops and transfers from the local airport.
Write On
is Door County, Wisconsin, welcomes applications from emerging and established writers in any contemporary literary genre. Each resident received a private bedroom and access to The Coop, the writing studio of the late writer Norbert Blei. Residencies last for between one week and one month and applications are accepted year-round.
Hosking Houses Trust
located in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, seeks to appoint women writers over the age of 40 who need time in which to start, continue or complete interesting or innovative work in English dealing with any subject. Private accommodation is provided in Church Cottage and a bursary of up to £1000 per calendar month is provided. Applications are accepted year-round and the residencies are usually booked a minimum of six months in advance.
