One Story is inviting entries for the inaugural Adina Talve-Goodman Fellowship. This year-long mentorship on the craft of fiction writing aims to give a writer “outside of the fold” a significant boost in their career.
One Story is an award-winning literary magazine that publishes one story at a time, with subscribers receiving one curated work of short fiction each month. The fellowship is named in honour of Adina Talve-Goodman, One Story’s Managing Editor from 2012 to 2016.
The fellowship is intended for an early career writer of fiction who has not yet published a book and is not currently nor has ever been enrolled in an MFA program. The recipient of the fellowship will receive:
- Free tuition for all One Story online classes and programming offered in 2019.
- A US$2000 travel stipend and tuition to attend One Story’s July 2019 week-long summer writers’ conference in Brooklyn, New York, which includes craft lectures, an in-person intensive fiction workshop, and panels with literary agents and publishers.
- A full manuscript review and consultation with One Story Executive Editor Hannah Tinti (story collection or novel in progress up to 150 pages/35,000 words).
For this opportunity, One Story is seeking writers whose work speaks to issues and experiences related to inhabiting bodies of difference. This means writing that explores being in a body marked by difference, oppression, violence, or exclusion; often through categories of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, religion, illness, disability, trauma, migration, displacement, dispossession or imprisonment.
To apply for this fellowship writers must supply a fiction writing sample, a personal statement, a one-page resume and the contact details of two professional referees.
The deadline for applications is Thursday 15 November 2018 and there is no application fee. For full entry details and to apply, visit the One Story website.
One Story is also accepting literary fiction submissions until Wednesday 14 November. Pieces should be between 3000 and 8000 words in length and can be in any style and on any subject. One Story pays $500 and 25 contributors copies for First Serial North American rights.
