start-writing-fiction

Start Writing Fiction is a free online course offered by The Open University. The eight-week program focuses on a skill which is central to the writing of all stories and novels – creating characters.

Participants will hear from a number of successful authors, including Michele Roberts, Alex Garland, and Louis de Bernieres, as they talk about how they started writing. The rituals of writing and the importance of keeping a journal will also be explored.

The course is led by Derek Neale, an award-winning short story writer and graduate of the University of East Anglia’s MA in creative writing program. Neale is also the co-author of Writing Fiction.

Start Writing Fiction is intended for those with an interest in starting to write fiction or improving their fiction writing and does not require any previous experience.

Classes start on Monday 3 October. To enrol and for further information visit the Future Learn website.
